Yotsuya Kaidan – Tired Of Tomorrow’s You EP

Already two years around, Yotsuya Kaidan is an emoviolence quartet from Odessa, Ukraine, with members of Mariesena. Tired Of Tommorrow’s You is their very first release and it’s well-made in every respect. Partly, this can be attributed to the work of Will Killingsworth, who mixed and mastered the four tracks at Dead Air Studios. But he couldn’t have done such a good job without an appropriate foundation, delivered by the band itself. The composition of the songs, which were written in an abandoned shoe factory, answers the claim of an outstanding screamo record. On point and garnished with brilliant lyrics, declaimed in the band’s native language.

“You and I are dying - tasmanian tigers. I urgently need to take you - tasmanian tigers. Jaws twinkle like black holes. This is our dance for the sake of the revolution...”

During one of many conversations at Miss the Stars Fest in Berlin a few weeks ago someone told me that there are little screamo bands in France. Monte Ida from Rennes is just another proof, that this is not true. Mastered by Comadre’s Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden, the four songs Extended Play is full of breathtaking melodies. Their sound is quite unique and it’s pure pleasure to listen to those songs again and again. Monte Ida is Cédric, Quentin and Pierre-Marie and they are a French Screamo outfit, which is worth listening to. Best regards to Henrik of Kishote. ;-)

“Turn off the light / Ghosts revealed to my eyes / Separate what’s dead and what’s not / Take the broken pieces / Imagine what must breathe then fix it / Put yourself in the skin that others worn before you and wasted”

+ interview w/ Stefan Ćirić

To be absolutely honest: I didn’t like this release at first. Not that surprisingly, replies Stefan Ciric, the vocalist of the band. According to him, the songs are also pretty different for the band itself. Anyway, I gave those songs a second chance and I’m glad that I did. After a few extra spins, the seven new songs of Belgrade based emoviolence triumvirate Eaglehaslanded grew on me. And so it happens that their new selftitled EP is their fifth straight release, which found its way onto this little blog. Mirage/Мираж is the highlight track on the EP and probably one of the best songs Eaglehaslanded has ever written. This seven inch is definitely another must listen.

Lost Boys - S/T

OH MY FUCKING GOSH. Already after a few seconds of the opening track, frauenhofer insel, and I’m totally blown away by the sound of this recently founded threepiece. The following five tracks are brilliant as well, getting every emo heart beat faster. Also mixed and mastered by Mr. Killingsworth, their tremendous interpretation of emotional punk music makes you want to bang yer head. For this exciting project from Nuremberg/Erlangen Todlowski teamed up with Julian of Masada. What a combination, what a surprise. Favorite Track: vampires

"Es bleibt dabei: All my friends are vampires. I didn't know they were vampires. Turned out to be a vampire myself in the devil town. (ob ich schon wandelte) im finsteren Tal (fürchte ich) Struktur als Selbstzweck (stets eine) eine erratene Pointe ein offensichtlicher Twist."

Eaglehaslanded / Foxmoulder – Split

After one split and one EP, the Split with Foxmoulder is already the third release of Eaglehaslanded featured in this category. Besides five new angry songs, the side of the band from Belgrade also includes two older songs, which were released earlier this year on a 2-song-EP. The remaining five tracks are contributed by Foxmoulder from Toronto, Canada. Their lyrics are utterly beautiful, wrapped in an amazing screamo soundscape. Co-released by Koepfen, Krimskramz, Boslevan, TRVS Records, Mosh Potatoes and Zegema Beach Records, the 12’’ Split will be published in August. It will be available on black vinyl, which comes up with various sleeves in different color combinations.

“So is this your home you fight for? Or just another place to hide?”

Erros + Massacre / Tempano – Split

Erros + Massacre from Madrid, Spain are also not unfamiliar to this category. Following their split with Coma Regalia this is their second release in 2015. This time they teamed up with their compatriots in Tempano. Compared with the metropolitans, the sound of Tempano is more playful, which is ascribable to the short playtime of the chaotic songs of the Madrilenians. None of their tracks reaches the playtime of one and a half minutes. Anyway, both sides of the Split have their own charm, perfectly harmonizing together. The record will be published by 14 different labels from seven different countries, including Dingleberry, Pike Records, Pure Heart Records and Boslevan.

“When you think make a prisoner, art is your last weapon. Chaos never died.”

Hey Ruin – S/T

On their selftitled EP seven inch, Hey Ruin from Trier, Germany are taking you to a diverting journey through two melancholic songs. Their danceable emopunk sound is studded with indi-ish melodies and eloquent lyrics. This combination is a perfect fit, which results in a joyful listening experience. If you like “Brangelina”, “Willy Fog” or “atmen, weiter…” you will love both songs of the EP, which is available via Fear Of The Heights and Homebound Records.

“Was jucken mich die alten Lieder? Ich will die Hits hören und zwar immer wieder!”

„Und sie sagt, dass Ordnung außen, Ordnung innen schafft. Und er sagt, dass eine runde Birne noch keinen Apfel macht!“

Marais / Auszenseiter – Split

Lastly, another split record. Released by I.CORRUPT.RECORDS, lifeisafunnything, Allende Records and Voice Of The Unheard, this liaison works incredible well. The first five tracks are contributed by Marais from Cologne, Germany. Apart from two old songs, there are also three new ones, recorded in the same 90s inspired style as the songs from their selftitled debut EP. Each of them is beautiful, packed with mighty soundwalls made of wrathy screams and angry guitar riffs. By this time it’s absolutely no secret that Marais are on top of the game in this genre. The second side of the Split is home to four Auszenseiter tunes. The gnarly sound of the Westphalians could be described as crusty screamo, which builds the perfect counterpart to the previous half of the Split. Go and preorder this entrancing collaboration on 12’’ vinyl!

Eaglehaslanded / Les 2 minutes de la haine - Split

This year, Eaglehaslanded show themselves pretty active, already putting out their second release, this time in form of a Split. On this occasion they teamed up with the French three-headed screamo outfit “Les deux minutes de la haine”, who start off the split with “Tampon Rose”, which is characterized by its dense atmosphere. The song is powerful and melodic, opening the Split EP perfectly. Just like their customary manner, the following songs by the Balkan screamo-monster are dark, nearly scary and intense. One can already suspect the intensity and emotions the songs will unfold when being played live. The 7’’ Split will be pressed on transparent and pink vinyl, limited to 200 copies.

Tantive IV – Versus///Verses

Do you remember, Daniel Sadcliffe? Tantive IV is another young and terrific screamo collective from Indianapolis. Even if “Versus///Verses” is their very first release, their sound is mature and captivates the listener. The lyrics are honest, emotional and very personal, telling a story of self-doubt, love and loneliness, alternately declaimed by Nathaniel and Rain. This kind of interaction adds the certain something to the band's straight-forward sound. This EP is recommendable for people who like Comadre and The Saddest Landscape and for everybody else, too.

“But I write the same song over and over and over again, and it doesn't make me feel any better What a shitty form of therapy”

Amygdala – The Horror Of Never Being Able To Forget

San Antonio, Texas: home to the defending NBA-Champ and 5-headed crust collective, Amygdala. The band from Alamo City plays emotive crust, combined with hints of screamo. Just like the Spurs destroyed the Heat in the NBA Finals ’14, Amygdala destroys you, as their sound slamdunks right through your ear into your brain where it melts your synapses while your inner buzzer hits 00:00. The impressive debut EP is available on tape, limited to 100 pieces and vinyl. We definitely want to hear more!

Sed Non Satiata / Carrion Spring – Split

Digitally released on December 1, 2014 the collaboration between screamo-heavy-weight Sed Non Satiata from Toulouse, France and Carrion Spring, is finally available on vinyl. From now on, the split LP can be preordered via ADAGIO830, Echo Canyon Records and Protagonist Music.

While most of the splits contain just a handful songs, this one takes its time and transports you in a different world, full of dreamy soundscapes and desperate screams. Both bands convince you with a blend of screamo and epochal post-rock parts.

The release will be 2015-02-03.

Miriel Fëanor – Oceandrops EP

Miriel Fëanor are from Nitra, Slovakia. The screamo fourpiece was founded back in 2014 and comes up with one of the first releases this year. Oceandrops is their debut Extended Play and includes six tracks, containing some decent post-rock sound combined with hints of screamo. This one can be the perfect soundtrack for a long and dark winter.

Eros + Massacre/Coma Regalia split 8"

While Coma Regalia continuously producing split after split, this is only the second album of Madrids Eros + Massacre. Also released in the very beginning of 2015 the collaboration between both bands is a classy screamo split record. There will be a European release next month but if you don’t want to wait, you already can preorder the split via Indiana based label Middle-Man records.

Batièn - Frammenti del mio flusso che insieme sono un puzzle, divisi i continenti"

Batièn is a four-headed screamo collective from Bologna, Italy. They are probably the best band from Italy since Ojne conquered the stages. Their debut EP ”Frammenti del mio flusso che insieme sono un puzzle, divisi i continenti” won me over at the first listen. The Sound of the EP is passionate and makes me curious about what might come next. This is definitely an EP which would have made it into my end-of-the-year-list if I had discovered them earlier. Highly recommended.

Eaglehaslanded – rec"

The intro of the first song takes up the 8bit sound of “Bringing the pizza home“. Because of the artwork of the 2 song EP showing a floppy disc in the style of 80s video games, I thought the whole EP would take the same line as the 8 bit album. But, far from it! After 16 seconds the familiar Eaglehaslanded-sound bursts through. And this is exactly where the second song picks up. Those two tracks are hysteric, violent and so passionate.

“such a lovely family house,
let"s burn it to the ground.
leaving the ashes on our burnt bodies.
we only know about suffering.
the nightmare goes on and on.“

To be continued... FUCK, yes please!

Form und Leere: Please introduce yourself and the band.
Hello. My name is Stefan, when I am introducing myself to people I always say that I am an artist, but not to be cool just by saying that, I really think that during my education years I have worked on many projects that include music, illustration, video, graphic design, advertisements and organization.

My band is a three piece depression cult which expresses music in different ways, never minding the genre or quality of sound. Things we carry out live are more important to us than on a record. So we decided to call it eaglehaslanded because it is a common saying for something big that is happening at the moment. We don’t believe that we are big; we just like to surprise all the people in the crowd with sincere emotions. We once heard Nirvana’s song “Tourette’s“ which first was called eaglehaslanded. The song says it all.

Form und Leere: A few months ago you played on the open stage at Fluff Fest. Describe your very own Fluff experience and which band did you enjoy most?
It was so good to see people that we met at Fluff during the last years, people we helped with shows in our hometown, people who helped us to release our first vinyl and people that we know for years. It’s like a big family which communicates and sees each other not that often, but we still manage to say hi and have a good laugh from time to time. For me it is the best thing in the world.
I really enjoyed Heaven In Her Arms, because I was into this band years ago. So finally I had the chance to see them live.

Form und Leere: You guys just came back from a tour with Expectations. Tell us something about your impressions.
The tour was so good, seeing all the people that we met earlier this year and made friends was the best thing. New cities, cultures and never ending roads with our dear friends in Expectations cannot be substituted with anything in the world. 16 days of playing, partying, hanging out with friends, eating, drinking and sleeping in different cities was our vacation for this year.

image

Form und Leere: Besides playing in Eaglehaslanded you are doing other creative work. What exactly are you doing? Tell us something about your former projects.
Well besides music I do graphic design (like the artwork for “Somnolence”*), video projects and illustration. Currently, I am also working on my clothing brand (Lapot ) with some of my friends. A lot of creative work, but on the other hand I am trying to organize shows, finish my master degree and find some decent job, haha.

Form und Leere: What are your favorite releases in 2014 so far? Any recommendations?
Well, actually I am not following the new releases that much, but the new records of Dearest, 52 Hertz and Deer In The Headlights are pretty good! Sickmark and Torso: thumbs up!

image

Form und Leere: While writing the review for your s/t ep I heard that you and your parents had to immigrate to Russia because of the war in Serbia. Can you tell us about that?
My parents got a job in St. Petersburg and we moved because of the political and economic situation in Yugoslavia during the 90’s. War and inflation forced people to find a better place to live, but some of them stayed. We lived there for several years and Nemanja was born there (in USSR).

Form und Leere: How would you describe your life in Russia? Did you take roots and how was it to leave the country to return to Serbia?
At first, life was pretty boring, because we didn’t know anyone from there, because we were too young. But in the end we started attending school, so we had company all the time. Winter, depression and cold world, haha.

Well, for me it was great, because we were tired of winter and all the troubles there with the job of our parents, so it was better to go home at that point.

Form und Leere: When did you and your brother return to Belgrade?
We returned in the end of 1998, just few months before NATO bombed Serbia, which sucks because our family was trying to avoid those situations that struck Serbia in the 90’s. So we returned again to Russia in 2005 for few more years and then we came back to Serbia for good. Now we live here, making music- not war.

Form und Leere: Did you ever experience military attacks by yourself?
Actually some military bases were nearby our house, so we were constantly afraid to be struck by some bombs. One time a helicopter landed nearby our house so we were scared to death, that it could be a NATO helicopter, but in the end it was a Serbian helicopter which was hiding from NATO. Not that good experience.

Form und Leere: Thinking about the future, what are your hopes and plans?I hope to meet more interesting people and places, progress with the music and art in generally.

Form und Leere: Thanks a lot for the interview and sharing your story.

S/T (EP)

„До свидания…отпусти меня летать…“

Eaglehaslanded is a screamo outfit from Serbia, which was founded in 2012.

The band’s singer Stefan Ćirić and the guitarist Djidji grew up in the surrounding region of Belgrade. As the country was shattered by the war, the Ćirić family immigrated to Russia, where Nemanja was born. After living there for several years, Stefan and Nemanja Ćirić finally returned to Belgrade.

The EP, which was released in June 2014 via Shivery Productions, is opened with a scenic intro called “Leaving The Church In Ashes“. It starts with the sound of three clattering empty bottles and after a few seconds a dark guitar riff and a manic voice drop in. This one sound pretty disturbing and spooky, borrowing samples from an old American movie (“The Warriors”).

The following song is capturing the mood of the intro and continuing in the same manner. The vocals are brutal and off the wall while bass and drums come swinging at you. The lyrics are quite depressive, describing the way you feel being caught in regrets and how it can change oneself. The next track „White City lies” begins calm and dreamy till harsh screams set in and the song gathers speed. Halfway through, Eaglehaslanded is slowing things down without losing any intensity. “Raul And Julia (Lizards And Queens)” connects perfectly. It is the beautiful interpretation of a farewell song that does without many words. The EP concludes with “Uvijek Sam Usamljen Ja”, an old Yugoslavian folk song, which makes way for the pushing vocals and the rough screamo sound.

In my eyes, European screamo is so exciting and vibrant as it has never been before. The new selftitled EP of Eaglehaslanded is definitely another proof for that.

“Don’t expect forgiveness from me, I’ve already buried your orchids underground my tears are so sour that my eyes burn, inhaling poison from your breath, I feel nothing. No words, only broken promises…”
